Empowering Communities Through Digital Inclusion and Sustainability
Staffordshire and Shropshire Health Informatics Service (S&SHIS) is proud to have partnered with Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) on a transformative initiative that tackles digital poverty and promotes environmental sustainability: the Digital Amnesty Initiative.
Bridging the Digital Divide
In today’s world, access to digital technology is essential for education, employment, healthcare, and social connection. Yet many individuals and families still face barriers due to lack of access. The Digital Amnesty Initiative was created to address this challenge by repurposing unused digital equipment from across MPFT and redistributing it to those in need.
S&SHIS played a pivotal role, providing technical expertise and operational support to ensure every donated device was safe, secure, and ready for use.
How It Worked
Devices including laptops, desktop PCs, tablets, and mobile phones were collected, securely wiped, refurbished, and prepared for new users. This not only extended the lifecycle of the equipment but also reduced electronic waste—contributing to a greener future.
Impact by the Numbers
Together, MPFT and S&SHIS supported 2,811 individuals across the region. Donations included:
- 647 SIM cards for mobile connectivity
- 331 mobile phones for essential communication
- 811 laptops, PCs, and tablets for access to education, healthcare, and employment
The total value of donated equipment reached £188,625, representing a significant investment in community wellbeing and digital inclusion.
A Model for the Future
This initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration between health informatics and healthcare providers. It sets a precedent for other NHS Trusts and public sector organisations to follow—showing that digital transformation can be inclusive, sustainable, and community-focused.
S&SHIS remains committed to supporting digital inclusion and environmental responsibility. We’re proud to have helped turn MPFT’s vision into reality and look forward to future partnerships that empower communities and protect our planet.
Together, we’ve proven that old devices can create new opportunities.
